Angry Bird begins life....in space

Angry Birds Space, the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning, best selling iOS game of all time, is set to launch later this month. In preparation for the event, Angry Birds developer Rovio has been doing a lot of promotion with NASA, including sending a pair of iPads up to the International Space Station. Their latest marketing effort: A zero-gravity live demonstration aboard the International Space Station Astronaut Don Petit stars in the video. After shooting a plush angry bird across the length of the station, Petit explains the concept behind weightlessness, and how planets affect trajectories. That discussion then transitions into shots of actual Angry Birds Space gameplay. In the game, the motion of the angry bird projectiles will change based on the location of gravitational bodies. We're not sure if the folks on the ISS will be able to spare the bandwidth to get the new game when it comes out, though we're sure they'd be glad to have something new to play with to pass the time. For those of us who are Earthbound, Angry Birds Space will be available for download March 22 on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices.

The actual gameplay can be seen after the 3 minutes mark of the video.

The new iPad is official, with Retina display, LTE and A5X CPU. Available March 16th

The New iPad has just been announced and this thing is packing a Retina display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement -- that's 264ppi. It's not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics chip. Apple even claims its newest sliver of silicon can deliver four times the performance of a Tegra 3 which is very amazing.

There's also a new iSight camera on board that's quite similar to the version inside the iPhone 4S. It's only five-megapixels, but it does have a backside illuminated sensor with a five element lens. It's also capable of capturing 1080p video, which should come as no surprise. We're also excited to see the keyboard sporting a brand new dictation key that lets you speak instead of type -- yes, just like on Android. The new software inside will also let you use the slate as a portable WiFi hotspot... so long as the carriers are game. It even has the ability to recognize at least some bezel gestures, as revealed during its iPhoto demo.

Perhaps most exciting though, is the new connectivity options -- you guessed, LTE! The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it's also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US. Outside of the states Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be scoring 4G flavors of the iOS tablet. Amazingly enough, even with an LTE antenna on board, Apple is still claiming to get 10 hours of battery life. That's probably partially do to the slightly increased weight of 1.4lbs, though the 9.4mm thickness is nothing to sniff at.

The new iPad will be available March 16th, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi model and scaling up to $829 for the 64GB version with 4G. So, on the price front, nothing has changed. Pre-orders start today in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with much of the rest of the globe to follow on March 23rd.

Nokia introduces the Lumia 610 at MWC 2012

Nokia’s Lumia 610 doesn’t have the slick unibody casing of the 800 or the huge screen of the 900, but it does have a bargain price tag. Pushing Windows Phone to a new price point – and into fresh markets – the fourth Lumia takes advantage of Microsoft’s new, pared-back minimum hardware specifications with just 256MB of RAM and an 800MHz processor. Style-wise, the Lumia 610 is more reminiscent of the Lumia 710 than its more expensive siblings, with a slick metallic band that runs around the bezel and up across the top edge of the phone – where the microUSB and headphone sockets are – and a selection of interchangeable back panels. Nokia plans to offer multiple color options, and is really pushing the concept that its recent phones offer more choice of hues than the aver age black smartphone lump. In the hand, it’s reasonably sturdy though obviously not as premium in its feel as other Lumias. The touchscreen – still running at WVGA resolution – is responsive and we didn’t notice any great impact from the slightly slower processor. Still, this is all prototype hardware and non-final software, so we can’t draw any final conclusions until the tweaked version of Windows Phone 7 is available to support the new hardware specs, itself expected in April.

What to expect on HTC Sense 4.0

There have been mentions on HTC's upcoming Sense 4.0 (to run on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) on the new "One" series since the end of January but it was only now we have more exposure on at what the Taiwanese company was preparing. HTC Sense 4.0 is trying to make Android a little nicer and more intuitive on the HTC One X, HTC One S and HTC One V. HTC delivered the next generation of their custom UI as promised, which is already known and preferred among Android enthusiasts. The integration is deep within Contacts, E-mail, Messages, Dialer, Browser and even Settings. The new user interface is colorful, elastic (when you're scrolling) and brings a couple of new bells and whistles to the table. For a more detailed look, check out the hands-on below!

Apple hosting March 7 event: iPad 3 on the way?

Apple is sending out invitations that shows a close up on what appears to be an un-released iPad, with the tight zoom subtly calling attention to the display's image quality. From the hardware-related leaks we've seen so far, it's seemed pretty much confirmed that Apple will be quadrupling the pixel count for the iPad 3, compared to the displays used in the iPad and iPad 2. There's still some uncertainty about the processor selection in the iPad 3, and if it it will feature an A6 chip or something called the A5X. In that vein, it's unclear if the iPad 3 will remain powered by a dual-core processor, or be the first Apple mobile device with a quad-core chip. There will be more to share when the event draws closer.

Sony announces Xperia P and U handsets at MWC 2012

Sony again surprises us at this year's MWC with 2 stylish killer smartphones in the form of Xperia P and U. We now have a look at the specifications of the fantastically looking twin smartphones.

The Xperia P sits between the U and the S in Sony's 2012 line-up. It's powered by the same dual-core chip as the Xperia U, but sports an aluminum chassis that feels great, and fits really nicely in the hand. With 4 inches of qHD resolution, the Xperia P's screen should represent a nice balance for mid-range buyers, too. Speaking of the display, Sony's introducing its new WhiteMagic technology with the Xperia P, which is designed to improve visibility in bright sunlight. Little information was on offer about how this actually works, but the results when the device was placed under a high-intensity lamp were plain to see -- icons and text in the UI remained clearly visible.

The Xperia U replaces last years Neo as Sony's entry-level smartphone. Aside from the design changes, Sony's brought some impressive hardware to the table, with a 1GHz dual-core Ericsson chip and a 3.5-inch WVGA "reality display" screen. Followers of high-end Android hardware might turn up their noses at WVGA on any device, but on a 3.5-incher, photos, videos and the UI still look crisp, and color quality is among the best out there.

The HTC One X is the company's flagship device from this point of time and it's HTC's first smartphone to come with a quad-core 1.5 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. It also comes equipped with a 4.7″ 720p HD touchscreen, 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and backside-illuminated sensor. The One X has 1080p full HD video recording, and the ability to capture a photo while recording a video. Other specs include 32 GB of built-in storage, 1 GB of RAM, HSPA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DLNA and NFC. Powering the One X is a 1,800 mAh battery and it's only 130g light.

The next announced device is the HTC One S. It is equipped with a 4.3″ 960×540 touchscreen and a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor. There is also 16 GB of built-in storage, 1 GB of RAM, 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash, BSI sensor, 1080p full HD video recording, and the ability to capture a photo while recording a video. Powering up the One S is a 1,650 mAh battery and it weighs 19.5g.

Last but not least is the HTC One V. The One V is classified as a budget phone and thus has the potential to also become the best selling smartphone. The One V has a 3.7″ 480×800 touchscreen, a 1 GHz processor, 5 MP autofocus camera with BSI sensor, LED flash, 720p HD video recording, and the ability to capture a picture while recording a video. There is also 4 GB of built-in storage, 512 MB of RAM
HSPA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 1,500 mAh battery to power up the One V. The One V weighs at 115g.

All three smartphones making up HTC's new One series will launch running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC's Sense 4 on top. Sense 4 marks the first design change for HTC's UI overlay in many years, no matter how subtle that change may be. And we're sure hoping that HTC has managed to cut down on system resource use by Sense as well.

Facebook ver 2.3 for Windows Phone now live in Marketplace

This new version of Facebook brings a complete and refreshed redesign of the UI as seen in the picture below. The smooth panorama look makes the app more Metro friendly and more importantly, it adds much more functionality like the ability to see and add "likes" to posts. There's also a refined tool bar at the bottom with quick access to Check in, Add (post) or quickly add/take a new photo. In addition, you now have access to pages, groups, feed filters, privacy information and banner images. Speed of the app seems on par with before and we're hoping for more reliable notifications. Timeline is still not supported in this version and is believed to be added in the next version update.

Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked and slated for May release

There are rumours that the eagerly awaited Galaxy S3 won't be making an appearance at the Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona towards the end of this month. However, there is a chance that the latest and greatest Galaxy device will hit the shelves before the end of first half of 2012. South Korea has even published a report to back this up. ET News believes that the first quad-core powered behemoth from Samsung will be released in May. As you might expect from Samsung, there are multiple variations of the Galaxy device in the pipeline, including a 3D version and one with a touch pen. ET also divulged some of the other specifications of the Galaxy S3. The S3 will feature an 8 megapixel rear and a 2 megapixel front camera, SAMOLED Plus display, 2GB RAM, and Ice Cream Sandwich. However, the S3 isn't simply about mighty specs. Measuring in at 7mm, the next-gen flagship from is also rumored to have killer looks. Samsung has witnessed spectacular success in the smartphone segment with the Galaxy S and S2. However, it will face stiffer challenge this year. The iPhone 5 is expected to be a significant overhaul that should hit the market around about the same time as the S3. 2012 should be an extremely interesting year for smartphone enthusiasts. Yum Yum!!

LG Miracle revealed

LG is preparing a mid-range Windows Phone codenamed LG Miracle. The Miracle is actually the rumored Windows Phone 7 known as the Fantasy. The Mango-powered Miracle will feature a 4" WVGA NOVA display, promising to make this one of the brightest Windows Phones to date. We're also looking at the standard 1GHz Snapdragon, 8GB of storage, a 720p-capable five-megapixel rear camera, and a VGA-class front-facing webcam. As far as connectivity goes, the Miracle should arrive with a 14.4Mbps HSPA radio, 5.0GHz-capable 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 3.0. Perhaps most interesting is the fact that Miracle is also said to be endowed with NFC tag-reading capabilities. The Miracle will be revealed at the Mobile World Congress later this month.

Still not getting enough of Windows Phone 7 Mango? Well, wait till you got hold of Windows Phone 8, widely dubbed as Apollo. The guys in PocketNow managed to snag a copy of a video starring Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore talking about what's coming in the next major revision. Those of you concerned with Microsoft's inability to go toe to toe with Apple and Google on specs can breathe a bit easier as new screen resolutions (four in total) and dual-core CPUs will be supported, while those clamoring for more storage will be happy to hear that microSD support has returned. These are the summarised details which Windows Phone 8 Apollo will support.

Support for dual cores

Support for four different resolutions, though no specifics were given

NFC support added, including payment and content sharing with WP8 and Windows 8 machines

Carrier control and branding of "wallet" element is possible via SIM or phone hardware

MicroSD support added for expandable storage

Transitions to core components from desktop, including kernel, network stack, security components and media support

Simplified porting of desktop apps to mobile

Zune desktop integration scrapped in favor of new, unnamed syncing app

Deeper Skydrive integration, including ability to sync data such as music collections

Xbox Companion app will get Windows 8 partner client

Native code support, simplified porting from Android and iOS

App-to-app communication and integration

Skype client with deep OS hooks that will make it almost identical to placing standard voice calls

Camera app now supports "lenses" which allow third parties to skin and add features to camera interface

DataSmart tracks and reports usage via app and live tile

Gives preferential treatment to WiFi, can automatically connect to carrier-owned hotspots

Proxy server will compress websites in Internet Explorer 10 up to 30 percent

Native Bitlocker encryption

Support for proprietary, custom built apps to be deployed behind company firewalls

Well, you can be sure I am looking forward for the launch of Apollo. Are you?
