Q. How do I set my own pictures directly as the background for the today screen?
A. Go to Start Menu=>Settings=>Personal=>Today Settings, and go to Appearance TAB, as shown below.

Tick "Use this picture as the background" and select your picture from there.
Although this is a simple way of changing the background image, I would recommend against it because there are several marked disadvantages to it. Read this post for the details.
Q. What are TSK files? How do i install themes to my PPC?
A. TSK files are theme files for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Follow the steps to install a new theme to your PPC
1) Transfer the TSK file to your Pocket PC. You have to keep them in the appropriate folders in order for it to be detected under Today Settings. Check out this post for more info.
2) Go to Start Menu->Settings->Personal TAB as shown in screenshot below.

3) Click on the Today icon and you should see the Appearance tab as follows.

4) You should see all the themes you have on your Pocket PC in the page shown in the screenshot in step (3). Tap (to select) the name of the theme you want to install.
5) Click on the "OK" button on the top right hand corner of the screen. Go to your today screen page. You should be able to see the new theme now.

Q. Microsoft Theme Generator v2.0 is only for PPC2002?
Yes, Microsoft Theme Generator v2.0 only allows you to create PPC2002 Themes (without tweaking). But it also works for WM2003/WM2003SE/WM5 with limitations. This is because there are only minor differences between PPC2002 Themes and WM2003/WM2003SE/WM5 Themes. Please read the rest of this post for the details and how to create WM2003/WM2003SE/WM5, and VGA/QVGA Themes. In addition, please do not use "Send theme to device when finished" because it may not work for non-PPC2002 devices.
Q. What are QVGA/VGA Extended Themes?
A. Extended Themes are QVGA themes which support both potrait(240x320) and landscape(320x240) mode. They also contain additional settings meant for Pocket Plus. That includes Pocket Plus today plug-in icons (for memory/battery status) and taskbar battery status bar design. To be able to see these icons, you will need to have Pocket Plus installed on your Pocket PC
VGA Extended Themes are VGA themes which support both potrait(480x640) and landscape(640x480) mode. They also include Pocket Plus settings just like QVGA Extended Themes. On top of installing Pocket Plus, you will also need a VGA-enabled Pocket PC in order to maximise the effects of the VGA Extended Theme.
On the other hand, Standard Themes do not support landscape or VGA mode as well as these specially formatted themes. But they are generally significantly smaller in file size as compared to Extended Themes or VGA Extended Themes.
Interesting to note is that Extended Themes don't seem to work well on Windows Mobile 5.0. So, if you do not have Pocket Plus installed, or are using a WM5 PPC, it's advisable not to use Extended Themes.
Extended Themes are created using Spb Extended Theme Generator. To create QVGA/VGA Themes without Pocket Plus icons (i.e. non-Extended Themes but has support for landscape/VGA modes), other theme editors are required, e.g. ThemeMaker by KAMware or ThemeMaker McDeb.
---------------------------------------------
Q. What are the differences between WM2003SE Themes and PPC2002/WM2003 Themes?
A. These are the few differences:
A. In Windows Mobile 5.0, the color of the bottom soft keys and the top taskbar are configured automatically if not set explicitly. The gradient for the taskbar and softkeys can also be removed and set to a flat color. To find out more about the issue with themes on WM5, you can refer to this thread.

- Background color for Notes/Tasks and other native apps are customisable in WM2003 Themes
- WM2003SE Themes have the option to use only one image file for both start menu background and today background. This can reduce the filesize of the theme.

Q. How to change Start Menu text color?
A. The following registry hack is only for Pocket PCs on Windows Mobile 2003 and up.
Launch a Registry Editor on your Pocket PC. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color and create a new BINARY value named 39 and set it to your desired color code. Examples are 00 00 00 00 for Black, FF FF FF 00 for White, FE 00 00 00 for Red and 00 00 FE 00 for Blue.
This registry hack is taken from the same page as the previous question. Tweaks2k2.Net also allows u to do this hack more conveniently.
Alternative solution to create WM2003 themes instead of Standard PPC2002 Themes. You can refer to this post for more help
Alternatively, you can also use WM2003 Theme Generators or FunnySnake TKCreator to edit the themes.

Q. I'm using Nyditot Virtual Display v4.0 on my WM2003 Pocket PC. Standard Themes look very ugly in landscape mode. What should I do?

For those who want to share their themes or screenshots in the forums.
Q. How can i share themes (or screenshots) in this forum?
A. You can upload your theme files with screenshot to theme sites like PocketPCThemes.com or PocketThemes.com (2nd site very slow acceptance of uploads currently due to overloaded queue list).
Alternatively, you can also attach the files and screenshot together with your post (using "Add This Attachment".
After u uploaded your themes to the theme sites, u can provide the download page url to the themes here. BUT PLEASE DO NOT POST THE SCREENSHOTS U UPLOADED TO THEIR SITE (PocketPCThemes.com or PocketThemes.com, etc) HERE. If you had uploaded your themes to PocketPCThemes.com or PocketThemes.com, providing the link to the particular page for the theme is sufficient.
You can upload your pictures by either attaching the picture to the post or uploading to an image hosting site or a webhosting account. However, it's not exactly advisable to make use of free webhosting accounts to post the pictures or file links over here.
Firstly, most free webhosting accounts do not allow remote loading of pictures (i.e. posting pictures on other sites other than their own). Secondly, the traffic (bandwidth) may be too huge to handle for many free webhosting accounts.
then simply use the [img] tag to post the screenshot in this forum (not this FAQ thread please) to display the screenshot with the link, e.g.
this is what i normally do when i post my new themes to this forum

another FAQ to add to the list
Q. I do not own a VGA device. but can i use a VGA theme or VGA Extended theme?
A. Yes, you can, but there are 3 disadvantages in doing so and hence i do not recommend u to use VGA themes.
Reason 1: VGA themes slow down the non-VGA device
Reason 2: the images used for VGA themes are not optimised for QVGA screen (i.e. u will only see one-quarter of the whole background image, because it's cropped rather than resized)
reason 3: VGA themes are larger in file size.
List of Pocket PCs with VGA Screens:
1) Toshiba e800/e830
2) Dell Axim X50V/X51V
3) HP iPAQ hx4700
4) Asus MyPal A730/A730W
5) Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720
6) HTC Universal, aka Dopod 900, O2 XDA Exec, etc
7) Acer n300/n310
