Here comes my 4th Pocket PC application :w00t:


CurrencyConv

CurrencyConv is an application for you to check out the currency rates and convert a sum from one currency to another.

This is the first beta version for CurrencyConv. In the future release, I will be adding in a feature to download and update the currency rates. Meanwhile, the rates are according to the one downloaded on 23rd March 2006.

Request for screenshots of the following configurations:
1) QVGA Landscape mode
2) Default VGA Portrait & Landscape modes
3) True VGA Portrait & Landscape modes
4) Square Screen

Please try and let me know if this app works well for you. :smile:

A little about the downloading of currency rates...The currency data file is actually 1KB and I know where to download it from. But I'm still exploring how to implement the downloading feature. Since it is such a small file, is it ok if I hard-code the program to download the file to a location in the main memory? Or do you guys prefer to have an option of choosing the location to keep the currency data file?

BTW, I tried using this apps but couldn't type in the value for the currency to convert. The keyboard does not pop up and there is no icon to activate the keyboard at the bottom of the screen.

For a start, you can download the file to main memory since it is so small. But option to save it in chosen location will be a bonus.

Which device & OS are u using? Can u try a soft reset and see if the SIP button appears? I have not added any code to hide the SIP button. :confused: But sometimes the missing SIP button could be due to a glyph cache issue. I also experienced the missing SIP button with other apps by other developers occassionally as well. Worse still, the SIP button is also hidden away from all apps until I perform a soft reset.

Main memory would be the best place. But having an option of choosing the location would be also nice. :happy:

I am using Dell Axim X50v, running WM2003SE.

I did a soft reset and I can see the SIP button now . Thanks.

Do u mean having an installer package for this app?

These are the reasons why I decided not to create the installer package:
1) Executables for Pocket PCs without any additional files give the user more flexibility where to put the program.
2) Avoid installation/uninstallation issues, especially the issues associated with apps not fully compatible with WM5.
3) Main reason: I still can't figure out how to create the installer package in both CAB and EXE/MSI. :sowwy:

For the next beta version (v0.2b), I intend to let the user manually download the currency file (I will provide the URL) and place it in the PPC. Then the app will offer the option of where to locate the currency data file. The "download" feature in the app won't come so soon yet (probably only in v0.3b) because I haven't figure out how to do it. :sowwy:

this is one tool I'm look fwd to espexially v.0.3b
I use currency converter a lot and hate to keep going to www.xe.com to do the conversion.

So it will be useful for me to have one running on my Exec that I can download the currency updates dueing the night and I have that info offline during the day.

So far a lot of currency converters I've tried don't look nice on my Exec landscape screen (due to non-VGA compatible). The best one so far is CurrencyConverter v2.0 which is a freeware but requires the NetCF v.2.0 which takes up 5MB in my device memory (so no go for me)

I've not tried Vicott's CurrencyConverter yet but I think it will look great on my Exec screen based on what I've seen from the softwares he has developed. Screen shots to appear soon
